Vincent Varga’s Imagine & Kurt Harder’s My Name Is Clarence

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

The Calgary International Film Festival has a program called Youth By Youth Cinema showcasing the next generation models of filmmakers. While attending the 2010 YYC program, I caught two films that really stood out for me — Vincent Varga‘s Imagine and Kurt Harder‘s My Name Is Clarence. Both these directors are in high school and both of them ended up winning top honours in the YYC program. (Imagine won Best Live Action and My Name is Clarence won the Youth Renegade award.)

Needless to say, I am extremely impressed (and kind of intimidated) by their raw talent.

And now you can be too!

Oh, and my wicked, awesome fundraiser for my new short subject social satire Uni is still going on! If you have the urge, your donation will go a long way to getting our independent short film off the ground! Plus, there are some cool gifts for donors. Roger’s Pass

Monday, September 27th, 2010

Calgary Writer/Director Colin Askey’s first feature Roger’s Pass screen at the Calgary International Film Festival this weekend. After hearing about the film for so long around town, it was a great to finally see it!

It is the funny, and surprisingly touching, story of a family sorting out a lifetime of interpersonal issues as the patriarch dies of cancer. It’s fantastic to see so much local talent on display, both in front of and behind the camera. Plus, the soundtrack is loaded with some great Calgary bands. If you get the chance to see this truly indie film, definitely give it a look!

One Square Mile of Earth

Sunday, September 26th, 2010

The Calgary International Film Festival is in full swing and I was out at the animated shorts program the other night. There was some really great work but I thought I’d post one of the films I found completely hilarious.

One Square Mile of Earth is a weird conversational comedy animated by Jeff Drew and voiced by comedy duo The Pajama Men. I’ve posted the short below broken into six parts. I highly recommend checking giving it a watch!
